A Passion for Fire

As the Scandinavians say, “No terrace without a fire…”

Stay outside longer. Think of warm summer evenings, but also throughout the rest of the year there are often beautiful days when an outdoor fireplace can be used to give that wonderful extra warmth and atmosphere on your terrace.
The fires have glass fronted doors so you do not suffer from smoke, ash or sparks on the terrace.
The CorTen steel gives the fires a solid appearance and long life. The rusting process is different for each fireplace and therefore every fireplace is unique.

NEW from RB73 – the NEW Fennek and Quercus

More outstanding designs by well-known Dutch designer Roderick Vos, the new FENNEK 50 and 80 have clean straight lines. New features include a self-draining flue, cap nuts on the legs to avoid marking the terrace and a new open door position for starting the fire.

The all new QUERCUS is an outdoor fireplace with an integrated oven. The oven has a pizza stone to prepare delicious pizzas, bread an other oven dishes. The top plate gets very hot, so you can also use it to cook.

PIQUIA

The Piquia model is a compact CorTen steel wood stove with an industrial look. This terrace stove has a galvanized steel door handle and stainless steel lock bolts around, both above and below the door. These contrast well with the warm rustic plate material. The legs of the 3-legged version are made of stainless steel. The version with 4 legs has a small ash tray on the back.

QUARUBA

The Quaruba model is a stylish wood stove with an elegant appearance designed for outdoor use. This cube-shaped terrace stove has an unique modular construction and is therefore assembled as desired with 1 ( glass fronted door) to 4 glass panels. The door catch is located between the door panel and the right leg. The version with 4-wheels is easy moved. In addition, the platform for the wheels can also be used as storage for firewood.

LOTUS

The Lotus has a basic three times repeating shape, with a total diameter of 100 cm. The function of the fire bowl is immediately recognized by the simplicity of design. Designed by the famous Dutch designer Roderick Vos. Vos hates intellectual stories about simple utensils. Vos:”The Lotus is just a nice, large firebowl that you can use to make a decent fire”. The “ridges” on the inside ensure that the logs do not slip. Even without fire, the Lotus is a beautiful decorative object for the garden. Lotus is available in a high and low version (with removable legs) in blasted untreated aluminum.

BIJUGA

The Bijuga model is a robust CorTen steel outdoor stove. The striking timeless design combines tight lines and surfaces with industrial accents.
The sheet material is folded out on the connecting seams and all bolts and nuts are visible. The hardwood merbau parts (knobs and push-bar) not only provide beautiful details but are also very practical for operation because they do not get too hot. The 2-wheel version with a push-bar on the rear can easily be moved. The emblem on the hood is a symbol for the collaboration with Atelier Rene Knip, the designer of this stove.

What is CorTen steel?

COR-rosion resistance: corrosion resistance
TEN-sile strength: tensile strength
Developed by US Steel with the aim of creating weatherproof steel. It is a metal alloy consisting of iron to which copper, silicon, nickel and chromium have been added.

CorTen steel properties

Characteristic of CorTenstaal is the brown-orange rust color and the long lifespan.
Through the addition of the other metals to the iron, CorTen steel develops a solid layer of rust, the oxide skin, which shields the deeper material from oxygen. In contrast to ordinary steel, corrosion is not a wear, but rather a protection of the steel.
The solid rust layer that has to develop will, depending on the weather, take 2 to 6 months. After this, the CorTen no longer delivers rust (water).

CorTen Steel benefits

– beautiful unique appearnce
– durable (lasts about 10 times longer than ordinary steel)
– strength (similar to stainless steel)
– no treatment needed
– 100% recyclable

Tips & Tricks

All RB73 fireplaces are made of 3mm CorTen steel and the mounting materials are made of stainless steel. This ensures that their products have a very long lifespan. In addition, they do not require any post-treatment. CorTen steel is specially made for outdoor use.

Maintenance recommendations

If the fireplace is not used for a while, remove the ash from the fireplace, otherwise it can get wet, which does not promote the lighting of the stove.
Keep the glasses clean, otherwise the dirt can burn in, in the long run and that is difficult to get rid of.
We supply a tube of copper grease with every fireplace. The hinges are already lubricated at the factory. RB73 recommend greasing the hinges with copper grease once a year.

How to grease the hinges

  1. Open the door
  2. Lift the door so that it comes out of the hinge pin
  3. Put some copper grease in the hole of the top of the hinge that is welded to the door
  4. Replace the door

RB73 use special heat-resistant glass with a “air spoiler” above each glass. The air flows naturally into the stove and part of it flows into the fireplace through the air gap above the glass. This creates a layer of air in front of the window, which ensures that the glass remains clean.

RB73 recommend using dry untreated wood (max 20% moisture) and no paper during lighting. All this ensures clean windows.

If the glass does turn black, special window cleaners are available in most DIY stores. The disadvantage of those is the windows can get greasy.

RB73 have another tip

Take a piece of kitchen paper, wet it a bit and dab it in the stove ashes. Use this to clean the windows. Afterwards, dry the glass with a dry piece of kitchen paper. Works perfectly!

We’ve made a video to show you how to get a wood fire burning properly. So that you get a clean combustion and much less smoke development. This prevents nuisance for neighbours and the environment. We use the top-down method for this. At the request of the Swiss government, research has been carried out into a production process that produces as little smoke as possible. This top-down method is characterised by the cross stacking of split dry wood, on top of that enough kindling and a few firelighters. In this way the fire gets enough air in the start-up phase and the flue is heated quickly, which ensures a good draft and a clean combustion. Good luck!

Burning tips

  • Use dry (15 to 20% moisture) and untreated wood!
  • Use the top down method
  • Use firelighters but no newspaper or paper!
  • Leave the door ajar when starting the fire, this provides extra air.
  • At the end let the fire burn out quietly
Quarubas are delivered with the heat shields lying flat on the base of the stone to avoid damage in transit.

After delivery the heat shield needs to be placed in the correct position.

How to install the heat-shield after delivery
